I first heard about The Highline 4 years ago when I saw an exhibit on it at MoMA. I was really interested in it then, but soon after packed my bags for Los Angeles, and kind of just forgot about it. Now that I’m planning to move to NYC (in 3 weeks! and with the love of my life!) I feel that everything that once excited me about the city is somehow popping up again. Like when I got an email notifying me that The Highline is finally open to the public!!!
For those of you who don’t know, here’s a little bit of information about it: The Highline was originally built as a raised railroad track for freight trains running through the Meat Packing District. Since 1980, no trains have run on the tracks. In 1999 a group formed to save the tracks and designs began to be submitted for a public park to be built on the raised tracks. 10 years later, voila! A public park with greenery and pathways have been built. I can’t wait to check it out for myself!
